If you are finding it hard to make ends meet you might well have decided to skimp on medical insurance and you are certainly not alone because all too many people do not have any type of medical insurance. In their mind, they simply cannot justify paying the additional money that would be needed.
But, is this really such a wise idea today? In almost all cases it could be a dreadful mistake. When you look at the way that health costs are climbing every year even the most basic procedures could cost thousands of dollars.
Let's say for example that you've been putting off purchasing health insurance. You really do not believe that you can afford to pay for anything extra from your account every month and so you simply put it off.
Then one day you're on your way home from a hard day's work when another driver pulls right out in front of you and you are forced to take evasive action to miss them. As a result you drive off of the road and hit a tree. Seeing this, the driver in the other car keeps on driving because they are scared. Not surprisingly, you suffer a variety of injuries and need to be taken to the hospital.
You can't really pick and choose whether you want to have life saving procedures performed on you following an accident. The doctors will just do what has to be done and you will get the bill later. Spending any length of time in a hospital emergency room is not exactly helpful when it comes to saving you money. The hospital in our example then presents you with a bill for approximately $45,000 for all of the treatment you received.
So now, instead of paying a couple of hundred dollars every month for health insurance, you are saddled with a bill which you will possibly never be able to pay. And, when you owe money to a hospital, they will send bill collectors and will in time sue. You may need to file for bankruptcy and your credit score will be ruined forever. In fact, your whole life could be negatively affected in this case.
Some sort of affordable medical insurance coverage is better than having no medical insurance coverage at all. Incidents like this happen each and every day and, if you possess some form of health coverage, your insurer will be able to save your bacon. Instead of you being stuck with a bill which you cannot pay you will have somebody who is going to take care of it for you.
You'll probably have to pay something but it is going to be much more manageable when you are getting assistance from your insurance company. If you have been putting off purchasing some kind of health insurance then do not put it off any longer. Don't try to convince yourself that it is not worth buying insurance unless you can purchase an expensive full-featured package.
Begin small with only the basic features needed in case of emergency and, as you begin to get comfortable with your expenditure, gradually upgrade the cover to get the features that you want. It will not appear to be such a large bite out of your paycheck if you take it slowly.
Health insurance is not something that you can really afford to be without so don't be afraid to talk to someone about the options open to you. There is only one way to find out what you can afford and that is to ask. For most of us meeting the cost of medical care without medical insurance cover is quite simply not a viable option.
